10 days across the land of upright people

Discover Burkina Faso.

About this journey.

10 days across 4 regions of Burkina Faso: the Lobi southwest, the Bobo country, the rock formations around Banfora, and the Kassena royal courts of Tiébélé. Each area has its own language, ritual life, and building style. The route links them in order, with enough time in each place to stop rushing.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Ouagadougou

Arrival in the capital. Airport pickup and transfer to Hôtel Azalai. Depending on arrival time, the evening can include an outing to one of Ouaga's traditional music cabarets — live Mandé balafon or kora, the kind of performance that isn't staged for tourists.

Day 2 - 4The Lobi Region — Gaoua

Two full days in Gaoua and its surrounding villages. The Lobi live in a clan system with no central chief — social organisation here runs through lineage, not hierarchy. We walk through working villages to understand how that plays out in daily life: compound structures, tata fortresses, sacred groves. Side excursions include the weekly market at Doudou and the ruins of Loropéni — a pre-colonial fortified settlement from the 11th century, now UNESCO-listed.

Day 5 - 6Bobo Country — Bobo-Dioulasso

The southwest's cultural centre. Bobo-Dioulasso is Burkina's second city, but it moves at a different speed than Ouaga. The old town's narrow lanes lead to the 15th-century central mosque, one of the best-preserved examples of Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick architecture. In the evenings, cultural performances — djembe, balafon, traditional dance — happen in neighbourhood courtyards rather than performance spaces. The next day takes us out to the Boromo villages, where oral traditions and agricultural rituals have been actively maintained across generations. The Guinguette nature site — a wooded stretch along the Houet River — gives the afternoon a quieter texture.

Day 7–8Banfora — Sindou and the Cascades

Nature takes over here. Trekking to the troglodyte village of Niang Sokone puts you inside a landscape the Lobi used to navigate on foot daily — rock overhangs, dry season streams, fossilised terracing. The Pics de Sindou — eroded sandstone columns rising 30 to 50 metres from the Comoé valley floor — are among the most unusual geological formations in West Africa. The Cascades de Banfora offer a different kind of terrain: tiered waterfalls feeding large pools in the middle of sugarcane country.

Day 9Tiébélé — Kassena Royal Court

The Royal Court of Tiébélé was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024. Kassena women have decorated its walls for generations — geometric patterns in white, red, and black, each one carrying cultural meaning related to lineage, history, and protection. The village sits in a baobab-dotted plateau near the Ghanaian border. We walk the full court, visit a potter's compound nearby, and see the artisanal gold panning sites that pull young men from across the region.

Day 10Return to Ouagadougou

The final day returns to the capital. We close with Mossi cultural sites — the Moogho Naaba palace, the artisan market on Avenue Yatenga, and a last walk through the Grand Marché. Transfer to Ouagadougou Airport for the return flight.
