Mask Festival

POUNI Mask Festival.

⏱︎ 4 Days

The Pouni Mask Festival brings together mask societies from across the Guiaro region for three days of ceremonial performance. Masks appear in sequence — each one tied to a specific lineage and carrying a specific function in the ritual calendar.

This is not a display for an external audience. It’s a community event that visitors are invited to witness with appropriate discretion. Our guides brief all visitors on protocols before arrival.

The festival takes place in May, at the end of the dry season, when the Guiaro valley is at its most open. Pouni sits roughly 200 km southwest of Ouagadougou, reachable by a 3.5-hour drive on sealed road.

Mask Festival

Dédougou International Mask Festival.

⏱︎ 5 Days

The Dédougou International Mask Festival — locally known as FESTIMA — is one of the largest mask gatherings on the African continent. Mask groups travel from Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.

Performances span five days and cover dozens of distinct mask traditions — from the horizontal butterfly masks of the Bwa to the zoomorphic masks of the Bobo and the tall fibre constructions of the Nuna.

Dédougou sits 230 km west of Ouagadougou in the Boucle du Mouhoun region. The festival draws cultural researchers, photographers, and serious travellers alongside local and regional participants. Accommodation is available in town.
