Ancient cities, living traditions

Mali

What Mali Offers.

Mali holds some of the oldest cities in West Africa. The Grand Mosque of Djenné, rebuilt in 1907 on much older foundations, is the largest mud-brick building on earth. The whole community replasters it every year, the same collective effort that raised it.

Mopti sits where the Niger and Bani rivers meet, a trading junction that still works much as it did 500 years ago. Pinasses loaded with grain and livestock move up and down the Niger, and the market at the port has barely changed.

The Dogon country runs along sandstone cliffs east of Mopti. For centuries the Dogon kept Islam at arm’s length by living in clifftop villages that were nearly impossible to reach, and many of those villages are still lived in today. Routes through Mali are arranged case by case.

Key Facts About Mali.

Entry point

Bamako-Sénou International Airport (BKO) handles international arrivals. Mopti Ambodédjo Airport (MZI) has limited regional connections but services are irregular.

Visa process

Visa required for most nationalities, available through Malian embassies or consulates. Processing takes 5 to 10 business days. Some nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Bamako airport, but pre-arrangement is strongly recommended. ECOWAS nationals are visa-free.

Weather breakdown

Dry season runs October through May. Rainy season runs June through September. Peak heat in March to May can reach 45°C and above in Mopti and the north. The Niger floods between September and December, making the inland delta impassable by road but navigable by boat.

Local currency

West African Franc CFA (XOF). ATMs are available in Bamako (BDM, Ecobank, BOA). Very limited ATM access outside the capital — plan on carrying cash for travel beyond Bamako.

Payment methods

Cash only outside Bamako. A few international hotels in Bamako accept Visa cards. Mobile money (Orange Money) is growing but not yet reliable for visitors. Bring Euros in good condition; USD is accepted but at worse rates.

Medical mandates

Yellow Fever vaccination certificate required. Malaria prophylaxis essential — Mali has very high transmission across all regions. Meningitis vaccination recommended, particularly for travel during the dry season (December to June). Hepatitis A and typhoid advised.
